Our ocean is under pressure. Over a third of global fish stocks are overfished. World Ocean Day is our moment to show how sustainable fishing contributes to protecting our ocean.
Together, we can spread the word and help people understand how much more sustainable fishing means.
Why sustainable fishing means more...
Fishing is sustainable if it leaves enough fish in the ocean and minimises impacts on habitats and ecosystems. So, when oceans are fished sustainably, it actually means they are more productive and there are more fish to feed the world.
Apart from protecting ocean life, sustainable fishing also helps to ensure food supplies for the future and supports communities that depend on the sea. If done right, we could catch 16 million more tonnes of seafood each year - enough to feed an extra 72 million people every year. That’s food security, jobs for 38 million people, and a real chance to fight hunger and poverty.
What does the MSC do?
The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) helps protect our ocean by recognising and rewarding sustainable fishing. Fisheries that meet these high standards can use the MSC blue label. This label confirms the seafood was sustainably caught, helping protect fish populations and ocean wildlife.
Our certification is based on the best science and trusted worldwide as the best environmental choice for seafood.
