The Science and Research Fund provides grants of up to £50,000 to support research projects that help MSC certified fisheries achieve best practice in sustainability and maintain certification.
The fund supports projects that deliver the essential research needed for MSC certified fisheries to achieve global best practice.
Amount of funding available: up to £50,000 per project.
Duration of funding: projects must be completed within a two-year period.
Deadline for applications: applications are now closed for 2022.
In 2022, we awarded over £280,000 to six Science and Research Fund projects, through the Ocean Stewardship Fund. These research projects will focus on reducing impacts on endangered, threatened and protected species, and habitats and include:
The fund is open to submissions from external organisations, including academic institutions, independent researchers, NGOs or MSC certified fisheries. Submissions by organisations must be made by a named individual who will be responsible for that project. All submissions must be applicable to an MSC certified fishery or fisheries, and applications must be accompanied by a letter of support from the fishery or fisheries related to the proposal.
Employees, trustees, agents, current contractors, and relatives of employees or trustees of the MSC are ineligible.

The Ocean Stewardship Fund offers grants to both MSC certified sustainable fisheries and improving fisheries.
The Recertification Assistance Fund (RAF) helps certified sustainable fisheries with the cost of Conformity Assessment Body (CAB) audit fees for the second or subsequent recertification audit.
The Transition Assistance Fund supports small-scale fisheries and fisheries in the Global South on their pathway to sustainability, and is part of our Ocean Stewardship Fund.
