The UK and Irish markets have remained firmly committed to supporting fisheries that are engaged with MSC’s programme. The latest Market Report findings shows the exceptional progress that businesses in both the UK and Irish markets have made in increasing the amount of certified sustainable seafood products. There's a wider choice on shelves, stronger retailer commitment, and notable expansion across categories, from preserved seafood and tuna, to pet food and supplements.

The UK retail sector continues to demonstrate global leadership in its commitment to sourcing and selling certified sustainable seafood.
- Shoppers spent £1.7 billion on 189,000 tonnes of MSC-certified fish and seafood products, a 14% rise from 2023/24
- MSC labelled products accounted for an estimated 65% of the value and 63% of the volume of all wild caught fish and seafood sold in UK retail
Sustainable tuna market update
One in two tins of tuna on UK supermarket shelves are now certified sustainable, a major turnaround for one of the nation’s favourite cupboard staples. Five years ago, fewer than one in five tuna products carried the MSC blue ecolabel, but today the UK retail sector is a global leader in sourcing and selling certified sustainable tuna.MSC UK Tuna Shopper Report
Thanks to retail commitments and the progress made in global tuna fisheries, the latest MSC UK Tuna Shopper report highlights:
- Nearly half (49%) of all tuna products available in UK supermarkets are MSC certified up from just 18% in 2021
- For the first time, tuna has overtaken cod to become the UK’s top-selling MSC certified wild-caught seafood species
